Character is important
updated June 9, 2009
Following is an email the DBAT Mustangs received from a college recruiter this week, the names have been removed for privancy; however this is a true and acurate statement as quoted.
"My name is Coach X and I am an assistant baseball coach at Y University. I saw your DBAT Mustang player throw this weekend and wanted to get your feelings on him. Not only what kind of baseball player he is but just as important what kind of kid he is. Does he show up on time, how does he interact with teammates and coaches, how are his parents, and anything else you
can add will be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time."
We offer this email because parents and players need to know what the college coaches are looking for. They are desperate for character, they could care less about talent if it does not have character.

DBAT Mustangs 11U Red Crowned Shootout Champs
updated May 3, 2009
Twenty-eight teams converged on Ardmore, Okla., Friday, April 24, for the 8th Annual 11U TX-OK Shootout – and by Sunday night only two remained – both from Texas: The DBAT Mustangs Red and the Flower Mound Warriors. Following the incredible success of the DBAT organization in the TX-OK Shootout the weekend before (12U Red took first; Mansfield took second) the 11U team, coached by Rod Murrell, had something to prove.
“We got off to a slow start for the season,” Murrell said, “with several new players, and consistently bad baseball weather. But we believe in these boys; they are incredibly talented, and we knew that once they came together as a team, they could beat anybody.” The team pulled it all together in Ardmore, going 7-0 and outscoring opponents 74-17. That impressive showing included two shutouts and four run-rules.
In the championship game, the Mustangs spotted the Warriors one run in the first, but made it up on a pair of singles and some hustle in the second. After allowing a second Warrior run in the top of the third, the Mustangs fought back and again tied it in the bottom half. After three it was tied at two.
The DBAT Red team put together three hits – a pair of singles and a double – and went ahead 5-2 in the fourth – and they wouldn’t trail again. After tacking on an additional insurance run in the fifth, the boys held the Warriors to one run in the top of the sixth – and claimed the title.
“The Warriors are a strong team,” Murrell said, “and they fought hard. We just put it all together when we needed to – and I’m very proud of the boys.”
Next up for the 11U Red is the Super NIT in Tulsa this weekend.

DBAT Mustangs 12U Red wins TX/OK Shootout
updated April 23, 2009
The 12U DBAT Mustangs Red won the TX/OK Shootout this weekend with a record of 6-0. The bats were on fire scoring 55 runs and the pitching & defense were fierce allowing only 3. Overall, the tournament environment was very difficult and the team dealt with rain delays, nasty fields, cold weather, 30 mph winds and by the time the trophies were handed out, sleep deprivation. The tournament opened with a postponement of our Friday night pool game and the cancellation of our 2pm pool game on Saturday. We finally played our first pool game at 8pm on Saturday night and beat the North Texas Thunder 10-0. Pool play continued Sunday morning at 9:30 with a 10-0 beating of the Oklahoma Blacksox. The championship brackets were drawn up and the #1 seed was ours. Our first bracket game started against the Oklahoma Justice. 1 inning into the game, they realized they got the bracket wrong and stopped the game. After a 20 minute delay, they changed our 1st round bracket opponent so we started round 1 again. This time against the Edmund Tigers. After a 9-0 pounding, we faced off against the Dirtbags. After beating them 9-1, we waited to find out who our semi-final opponent would be. Emerging from the other quarter final game was the DBAT Mustangs-White. After the dust had settled on the battle of the Mustangs, the Red team came out on top 6-2 and once again went into "wait" mode. After the other side of the bracket had been decided, the Championship game would once again be a battle of the Mustangs as the DBAT Mustangs-Red would face off against DBAT Mustangs-Mansfield. After 4 innings, the Red team came out on top winning the Championship game 8-0.
14UD-Bat Mustangs Blue wins Elite 32 Berth in Phoenix
updated April 5, 2009
The 14U D-Bat Mustangs Blue coached by Dax Powell and Ross Hawley are the first 14U team in the area to win a berth to the Elite 32 World Series in Disney this summer. On the weekend of March 27-29, D-Bat Blue along with the Dallas Tigers and 12 other teams from Arizona, California, Colorado and Minnesota attended the USSSA Arizona Super NIT in Phoenix. D-Bat had a rocky start in pool play losing to CC Elite from Cherry Creek, CO, 15-5, but then went on to handily win their other two pool games 13-4 against the Blizzard BB Academy Black from Minnesota and 14-6 against the Desert Firebirds from Arizona. In the first round of bracket play, D-Bat confidently beat the Broomfield Yankees from Colorado 14-6. Next, they again faced the Blizzard who earlier as the #14 seed sent home the #3 seed, Arizona Heat. D-Bat won this round against the Blizzard with a score of 6-3. In the semi-finals, D-Bat faced NorCal Baseball who earlier that morning had sent home the #2 seed, CC Elite, with a solid 10-0 score. The semi-final games were very important as this Super NIT gave away 2 berths to the Elite 32 and thus the winner of this game had secured a coveted prize. The game was extremely intense and close. Going into the sixth inning, NorCal led 3-2. In the bottom of the sixth inning, D-Bat was able to score 4 runs and keep their bats alive until time had expired. With the Elite 32 berth in hand, D-Bat moved into the Championship game against Team Rawlings Elite. Earlier in the day, Team Rawlings had beaten the Dallas Tigers in the quarters and the SoCal Birds in the semis. Team Rawlings played a flawless game. In the last inning of the game, Team Rawlings was up 6-3 with D-Bat up to bat. D-Bat had bases loaded, but was unable to pull off the victory and were awarded runner up. While never happy with second place, D-Bat Blue had succeeded in their primary goal and are now preparing for the Elite 32 later this summer.
